  • Airport Firefighter



    Applications are invited from qualified male candidates who wish to be considered for appointment as Airport Firefighter, to work at Airport of Rodrigues Ltd, Sir Gaetan Duval Airport, Plaine Corail, Rodrigues.

    1. AGE LIMIT

    Candidates should be between 18 and 30 years of age by the closing date for the submission of applications.

    2. QUALIFICATIONS

    A Candidates should be the holder of a General Certificate of Education from a recognised institution with passes at “Ordinary Level” in five subjects including English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics obtained on one certificate or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Board of Directors of Airport of Rodrigues Ltd.

    B. Candidates should

    i. have a good physique with their Body Mass Index (BMI) values ranging between 18.50 and 24.99.

    ii. have a normal eyesight (without glasses or contact lenses) and also satisfy the following minimum requirements:-

    For Male Candidates:
    Height : 1m70
    Chest measurement (normal inspiration): 84 cm

    NOTE:

    The weight measurement of candidates will also be taken for the purpose of computation of the Body Mass Index (BMI) of each candidate. The formula for the calculation of the Body Mass Index (BMI) is:

    BMI = W (in kg) where W is the weight and H is the height of the candidate
    H2 (in metre)

    C Candidates should possess a Private Car Driving License (manual gear). Candidates, if selected, will be required to obtain a Goods Vehicle Driving License (manual gear)
    during their probationary period, failing which their employment shall be terminated.

    D Candidates should have the ability to take initiative, to work within a team and to
    demonstrate excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and be Computer
    literate.

    3. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. To man and maintain

    (a) fire fighting appliances and equipment,
    (b) rescue boats, liferafts and related equipment and
    (c) the airport fire station.

    2. To participate and/or take charge of a crew in fighting, controlling and extinguishing airport and aircraft fires, effecting rescue of persons and property and in preserving lives.

    3. To perform sentry duties, fire drills, physical training and attend parades.

    4. To ensure that aircraft movement areas are clear and safe for landing, taxiing, parking and take-off, to perform safety inspections of the airport premises, to make periodical inspections of firefighting equipment and appliances, effecting minor servicing/repairs and, where applicable refueling.

    5. To drive fire-fighting vehicles whenever required.

    6. To perform office duties including keeping of records, occurrence book, answering telephone calls and raising fire alarms.

    7. To participate in the training of junior colleagues and new recruits, organize simple drills and replace the Airport Fire Officer, whenever required.

    8. To participate in rescue operations during national calamities and major accidents, and to perform any other related duties. Airport Firefighters may be required to work on a 24-hour shift system throughout the year and carry out such duties as may be required during cyclones and emergencies.
    Initially the selected candidate will be employed on probation for one year and will be subject to confirmation in the post thereafter upon satisfactory service and on mutual agreement.

    4. REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS

    Salary scale: 12,000 x 480 - 16,800 x 600 - 18,600 x 720 - 21,480 x 960 - 22,440 x 1080 -23,520
    Passage benefit granted upon confirmation in the post.


    5. SELECTION PROCESS

    PHASE 1 Short- Listing

    Candidates are pre-selected based on skills and qualifications claimed as per applications, in response to Advertisement circulated in Press. Suitably qualified candidates possessing a valid driver’s license are invited to Phase 2.

    PHASE 2 Height, Chest, BMI Measurements and Verification of Credentials

    Phase 2 of the selection process will consist of:

    A Verification of credentials. Candidates are asked to bring certificates, driver’s license and any other documents in original for verification.

    B Height and Chest measurement. The minimum requirements will be as follows:
    - For Male Candidates: Height : 1m70
    - Chest measurement (normal inspiration): 84 cm

    NOTE:

    Only candidates who meet the height, chest and BMI requirements will be qualified for Phase 3 of the selection process.

    PHASE 3 Physical Fitness Exercise and Ability to Swim

    The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) will be carried out as follows:

    B Muscular Endurance Sit up 45 in 1 minute
    C Muscular Endurance Push up 30 in 1 minute
    D Muscular Strength Lift weight Lift weight of 70 kg
    E Balance Stand on equilibrium ball Stand for 1 minute
    F Flexibility Trunk flexion Stand and reach test
    G Swimming Swim in a pool Up to a distance of 50 m


    PHASE 4 Aptitude Test

    Candidates satisfying phase 3 will be called for a written aptitude test consisting of numerical and verbal reasoning, as well as situational questions.

    PHASE 5 Interview & Security Clearance

    Candidates having undergone Phase 4 successfully will be called for an interview. Candidates will be required to submit a “Police Clearance” or Certificate of Character in line with prevailing Civil Aviation (Security) Regulations, if called for an interview.

    PHASE 6 Medical Test

    Following phase 5, successful candidates will have to go through a complete medical test.

    6. MODE OF APPLICATION

    C. Photocopies of educational certificates and other referential documents.
    D. Photocopy of valid Driver’s License.
    E. Photocopy of valid Certificate of Character, if available.

    7. CLOSING DATE

    Applications should be submitted in a sealed envelope and should reach the Airport Manager by 14.00 hrs on 21 October 2016 at latest. The application should be addressed to The Airport Manager and the top left hand corner of the envelope should be clearly marked “Application for Post of Airport Firefighter”.

    8. IMPORTANT

    1. The post is restricted for service in Rodrigues only.
    2. Preference will be given to qualified candidates domiciled in Rodrigues.
